14 Feb WTF
You might have noticed my absence from The Times and The Malta Independent on Sunday, and if you haven’t you might want to get your head checked. Well, last December, in a life-revelation-mid-life-crisis kind of way, I decided to cut down on the writing and to dedicate more time to what I love doing most.
So I went shopping, then I went out for long walks, enjoyed some nice meals with friends, and watched lots of TV. It all got old very quickly so I resorted to the second most loved thing on my list – digital and social marketing for brands and clients I enjoy working with.
I had been dabbling in this field for a few years and had had various degrees of success (and failures), but as my grandma used to say, the best things in life happen when you least expect them, usually when you have something stuck between your teeth, and almost entirely by accident.
You see, every social marketeer’s dream is to have content that they’ve created or shared, go viral. For a social marketeer in Malta that would mean having something they’ve created or liked, shared and commented on a few hundred times…at the very best, numbers could hit four figures but that’s about it.
So, you can imagine my surprise when a video I shared on Facebook logged in over a million views… over night!
The clip is funny, yes I get it, but it’s not that funny!! The video, which was originally sent to me in a private message by a friend, is shot somewhere in Germany but when I posted it to Facebook I had no idea of this fact. It just goes to show however, just how tied to culture humour can be.
Within minutes of sharing it on my wall (on which 98% are Maltese) I started getting ridiculous amounts of friend requests from Germans and Northern Europe. It took me a while, but I finally figured that the video had gone viral in Germany!
Today, the video has over 3 million views, more than 170,000 likes, almost 50,000 comments and 40,000shares.
WTF?
